Wellington, KS Mural (Majorie Hall Bicker)
This piece was created as memorial to some of Kansas’ history. It was painted on the side department store that later was turned into apartments. On the left side of the panting, there are two horses that are pulling a covered wagon. This is to remember that the Oregon Trail passed through Kansas all those years ago. All those settlers had passed through the Kansas territory trying to stake out their claim. In the center of the picture there is a rather large steam engine. This signifies Kansas’ heritage when it came to the race to connect the east coast and the west coast. On the far right side of the painting there is a combine in a wheat field, arguably the most recognizable symbol of the state. Kansas is one of the largest producers of wheat in the country. Off in the distance there is also grain elevators on the horizon that are used to store the wheat. Flying into the blue sky over the top of this combine, is a space shuttle. The artist incorporated this to signify our space history. The Cosmosphere in Hutchinson, KS has a very large collection of relics from America’s space exploration days. Lastly there is a an old prop plane flying over the top of the steam engine in the middle of the picture. This is to reference that Wichita, KS has deep ties to aviation, and has several Cessna plants in the town itself. The artist did an excellent job of including many parts of Kansas' history in this mural. Her canvas on the side of the building also references small town life, which is what makes up most of the state.
