Air Conditioner (Willis Carrier)
The Air Conditioner is one of the most widely used commodities of this era. Its main use, is to keep a rooms temperature at a comfortable level. One would be hard pressed to find a home in the United States, which did not employ one of these to keep their house cool. It can be many sizes, from a window unit, to an industrial sized unit that stands over two stories tall. Most of the time the units are hidden behind a house, or on the roof of a business.
The air conditioner pulls in air from the outside with a suction fan, and through the help of a condenser, compressor, and evaporator; it then blows out cold air on the opposite end. We will not get into the mechanics of it, but it has many uses. They also use a more powerful version for our freezers and many other things. The very first air conditioner was rather large in size. Its materials and design have since been upgraded for more cost effective and functional designs.
The man who invented the first air conditioner was named Willis Carrier. The Carrier name still lives on today with many of these units bearing the name. He was eventually dubbed the “The Father of Air Conditioning”, after officially getting a patent for his invention. He was an engineer/ inventor that worked for a lithography and publishing company that was having some humidity issues. That was his original inspiration for his invention. The modern world would not get very far without some sort of temperature control device.
