The Plains of Heaven (John Martin)
This piece has a very fitting name. No one knows what the end will look like, but In my opinion this is a very good representation. It is so vast that it is hard to take it all in at once. There is a mountain range that fades into the horizon. The rest of the piece is made up of a body of water and small hills. Also, there is a cluster of angels that are gathered in the middle of the piece, this creates a focal point for the picture. This conveys a little bit of the artist's message, which is taken directly from the bible.
This piece is one a three, in series called "The Judgment Series". It is the second in chronological order and it was taken from a passage in the book of Revelation. The idea for this painting was said to be mostly romantic. Even though it definitely has a heavy religious theme.
"The Judgement Series" did not become popular until after Martin's death. This piece became heavily toured in England and America. However, it was slowly pushed to the side and eventually forgotten. By the twentieth century it had lost all popularity. The Artist, John Martin was nicknamed "Mad Martin" and it wasn't until the series was reunited in 1974, that it started to make a comeback.
