7th Plague of Egypt (John Martin)
This piece depicts an ancient biblical scene of Egypt, during the plagues. Moses is in the left hand corner of the painting standing on the rooftop. His eyes are on the heavens and his arms are outstretched. The sky is dark and stormy, except for one area that appears to be opening up at Moses’ command, as if he calling up to heavens. Everyone else is cowering away from the light, not wanting to see what follows it. There is a pyramid in the distance that is blanketed in darkness.
This is another painting from the artist, John Martin. I have found that I rather enjoy his paintings. He did a lot of biblical paintings that were his ideas of what he thinks these scenes would have looked like. Also, most of his paintings are fairly large in scale, and I find myself fascinated by all the minute details. The clouds are especially interesting in this piece.
